The Challenges of Anxiety

Anxiety can become so intense—even crippling or paralyzing—that it feels like it runs or ruins your life.

It takes many forms: thoughts about not being good enough, or of being judged by other people, or of painful things that have happened in the past, or of bad things that might happen now or in the future; feelings of dread, discomfort, fear, or panic; memories of pain, or sadness, or regret; physical sensations of restlessness, muscle tightness, rapid heartbeat, stomach discomfort, or headaches; and urges to get away, maybe to stay in bed, or to use a substance, or to go on your phone or computer. The common urge is to do something, anything, to get some relief.

Seeing Through The Storm

However, for many of us, relief is fleeting. The experiences described above stick with us and often come back even more strongly. A dark shadow lurking, perhaps only in certain situations, or often waiting for us every morning when we wake up and every night when we hope to fall asleep. The more we try to overwhelm this perceived foe, we often find that it is the one increasingly overwhelming us.

Nothing Wrong With Anxiety

Anxiety, as it turns out, is a normal human process. There’s nothing wrong with you that you get anxious or scared. In fact, all the symptoms of anxiety described above can be very useful at times. Unfortunately, as a society we don’t do a great job of helping people understand these processes. We stigmatize or criticize people who are struggling. Often, we’re our own worst enemies in this regard, labeling ourselves as ‘a mess,’ ‘broken,’ ‘screwed up,’ ‘a headcase,’ ‘crazy,’ or ‘hopeless.’ This is where we come in. We don’t think you’re a mess or broken (at least not any more than the billions of other people that share this world with us) and it turns out there is every reason to be hopeful.

As trained Philadelphia and New Jersey psychotherapists, we specialize in helping people struggling with all forms of anxiety, including generalized anxiety, social anxiety, perfectionism, panic attacks, phobias, illness anxiety, agoraphobia, and trauma-induced anxiety, understand what is happening to them. We can help you get clarity about why these symptoms are so pervasive and intense and find your way to a workable sense of control, freedom, and purpose.
