Find Clarity

Impossibly Overwhelming

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can feel like an impossibly overwhelming obstacle to a content and satisfying life. Typically, it involves a life ruled by two factors: persistent thoughts or feelings that create a sense of discomfort or doubt (obsessions) and external behaviors or internal strategies utilized to try to provide a sense of relief or protection (compulsions).

OCD Is A Frustrating Cycle

Unfortunately, these relief-oriented strategies often come with increasingly fleeting results. The more we try to win these games against our discomfort or doubt, the more uncomfortable and uncertain we get over time. This frustrating cycle is often compounded by the pain that comes from having to sacrifice other things that are important to us in efforts to win relief from the discomfort or doubt. We are often surrounded by people who don’t understand and who sometimes are overwhelmed themselves by some of the choices we make.

Nothing Wrong With You

OCD, as it turns out, is a product of normal human processes. There’s nothing wrong with you that you get anxious or scared, or that you make choices designed to help you deal with those worries and fears. In fact, we have found that typically those choices come from a very well-intended and compassionate place. Unfortunately, as a society we don’t do a great job of helping people understand these processes. We stigmatize or criticize people who are struggling. Often, we’re our own worst enemies in this regard, labeling ourselves as ‘a mess,’ ‘broken,’ ‘screwed up,’ ‘a headcase,’ ‘crazy,’ or ‘hopeless.’

Including: Contamination, Just Right, Order/Symmetry, Hyper-responsibility, Harm/Violence, Pedophilia/Sexual, Existential, Relationship, Sexual Orientation, Hit & Run, Magical Thinking, etc.). The good news: it's highly treatable and we’re really good at it. We can help you get clarity about why these symptoms are so pervasive and intense and find your way to a workable sense of control, freedom, and purpose.

As OCD Psychologists in New Jersey and Philadelphia, we understand OCD: we know its games, we know how dreadfully burdensome it can be, and we know what it’s like to feel like you can’t beat it. We’ve seen it all when it comes to this diagnosis —
